PSV - Feyenoord (4:3)

PSV not conceded a single goal home, Feyenoord undefeated away

  • Published:

A win for PSV would keep them top table over the winter break, while Feyenoord need points to use one of the last chances for getting in the race for the title

Top table PSV and Feyenoord in spot four meet today to play the 14th round match that was supposed to take place a few weeks ago. With the point difference in the table between these teams now being 9 points, this might be the last chance for the visitors to get in the race for the title.

Clashes between these two teams are always ruthless, with both opponents doing their best to win. Only one out of their last 18 head-to-head games ended as a draw, while PSV managed to record a most memorable win when they crushed PSV 10-0 in October of 2010.

The team from Eindhoven are in top form, having won 7 out of 7 Dutch championship games home, not conceding a single goal. But Feyenoord didn't lose a single away game in the Dutch championship this season, while conceding only 2 goals in 6 of those. They beat PSV in both head-to-head meetings last season, currently being on a three-game winning run against the team that is now one point ahead of Ajax in the table.

It seems like we are in for a great game at Phillips Stadium in Eindhoven. A win for PSV would see them secure top spot in the table and the first half of the season title even before the final round of the year, which will take place next weekend.

- There two good news regarding our meeting with Twente last Sunday. We won and nobody got injured and we now look forward to playing Feyenoord in what might be a very interesting game - coach Phillip Cocu said. He can't count only on Schaars and Hiljemark, both of whom have been injured for a while now.

- The battle for midfield and so the called long-distance passes are the key in matches such as this one. If we manage to dominate, we'll have a great chance of recording a good result - Cocu said. He's not giving up on the offense-oriented 4-3-3 tactical plan, but doesn't believe the visitors will be scared engage in outplaying either.

- I expect Feyenoord to play to win because that is what they always try to do, both home and away. We are here to prove why we hold top table spot - Cocu said.

Feyenoord managed to salvage a point in the very last moments as they met AZ Alkmaar last Sunday. They were two goals down at half time, had much better possession and recorded 15 corner kicks, but still had a very tough time creating attempts against a very tough rival that AZ were. The opponents could have scored more than two goals and have every right to regret having let Feyenoord to make a come back.

That match gives the answer to the question why the Rotterdam-based team record better results away. They individuals are not as good to be able to dominate when they have to work with smaller space, but when the game is more offense-oriented, Feyenoord are much better and create attempts easily.

- We will try and win because we know that any other outcome would get PSV too far ahead in the table. Still, you never know what will happen in the 18 rounds both of us still have to do. PSV are the best team in the Netherlands, but that doesn't make them invincible - coach Rutten said after losing his winger Toornstre, a set-piece specialist and four-time scorer, on Sunday. He is set to miss the last two games this season with a knee injury.

- I'm focused on the players that will be in the game. I hope they'll be able to meet the demands this game is to put before them. PSV are particularly dangerous when in possession, with their players capable of creating attempts very fast and that is something we need to pay attention to. We plan to attack as well and I think we will have a say in this derby match - Rutten said and added that he will go with the more defense-oriented 4-2-3-1 formation.
