Defending champions in a crisis

The Spurs lost 5 out of the last 6 games and could be a bit tired today following a clash with Thunder yesterday. There's still no information about resting the veterans, but we'll know more after the shooting drill

New Orleans ambition is the playoffs but to get there, they will need to display a lot more consistency. The 50% efficiency they have now will not get them through to playoffs since nothing short of 50 wins will be enough in the West. One day after the impressive win over Thunder, Williams's team went on to lose 96-84 in Indianapolis. 

- We knew they are a tough time that won't be pushed around. We need to learn how to be equally tough and consistent after a good win - Anthony Davis said after recording team-best 21 point (8-for-18) and adding 9 rebounds. 

The Pelicans had field goal efficiency of only 39.8%, including 4-for-20 in three pointers. The New Orleans boys have been scoring only 25.5% percent of three point attempts, while at the same time playing less than impressive defense, allowing the opponents to score 49.8% of attempts. The Pelicans' opponents scored 51.6 points from the key on average in the last 5 games, while adding 15.6 points after the offensive rebounds.

- We have a good game that we do brilliantly and then we go on to do this. We need to find a way to be consistent the entire 48 minutes on both ends of the floor. We play great defense one night and good offense the next one. When we manage to combine the two in one game, we'll be a great team - Anderson said after finishing with 4 points (1-for-8 from the floor). 

Luckily for the Pelicans, the defending champions aren't doing that well lately either. They lost 5 out of the last 6 games after a very good start, currently being in spot 7 of the West Conference. Their last defeat was to Thunder 114-106 last night home.

- I think they outplayed us in every facet of the game - coach Popovic said.

His team allowed the opponents 16 offensive rebounds which is a problem they've had for a while now. Only the 76ers are allowing more than the Spurs (13.1) in the last 9 games.

- When they get half of their shots back, you can't say you fought in any form or shape - Popovic said. San Antonio's opponents are averaging 42% of three-pointers in the last 9 games. 

Their defense problems coincided with Leonard being out with an arm injury. He missed 7 out of the last 9 games, but judging by what Popovic said, he might be back on the team soon.

- It's the pain. He can't move his arm, he can't catch of dribble. We hope things will change soon. Good thing is, it can't get aggravated - it's only a matter of him using the arm without properly - Popovic said. His team had 7 players finishing with double-digits last night, with Matt Bonner spending the most time on the court - 32 minutes?!!!

It's almost standard procedure for Popovic to rest his veterans in the second game in two days, but that might not happen today since he didn't push them much last night and there's also the result crisis they're in. They cannot afford any more defeats to pile up while the rest of the competition races ahead in the battle for top spots in the West.

The Texas-based team won 11 out of the 12 games with the Pelicans before losing 100-99 early November this year despite Parker's 28 points. Davis was brilliant on the other team having finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Holiday added 15 points and 11 assists.
