Neptunas - Galatasaray (82:72)

Whoever loses, won't fare well

  • Published:

Neptunas's defeat combined with Laboral's win against Valencia eliminates the Lithuanians. If Galatasaray lose, they'd have to try to save things at home against Olympiacos and wait for Neptunas to be defeated in Valencia

Considering they have an away game against Valencia in the last round, and away games aren't really Neptunas's forte in the Euroleague (they lost by at least 11 in the games so far), this match is "to be or not to be" for their advancement to the Top 16. The standings show it. Galatasaray and they have 3-6 record, and Neptunas's defeat combined with Laboral's win against Valencia on Friday means they'll be eliminated.

On the other hand, if they manage to win today, Laboral's win against Valencia would work for them because Perasović's team would lose their chances for the second round, so the Lithuanians would have it easier in the last round away game because the Spaniards wouldn't be motivated.

There are a few other combos, Neptunas could easily need both wins till the end, but let's leave that till the last round when the situation gets clearer.

Right now, their primary focus is this duel against the Turks who crushed them in Istanbul. But, Neptunas are a far better team at home. 3-1 record at home proves that, they even had a chance against Olympiacos at home, but missed out on it.

- This will be an important game for both teams. We have to win one or both games to get placed to Top 16. I think we'll have a chance if we play a serious game. Galatasaray are a team with lots of experienced top players. Arroyo has a great individual quality, he easily controls the game rhythm, and we have to make life hard for him - coach Kazys Maksvytis said. Between two Euroleague shows, a defeat against Olympiacos and this game today, his team played a game in the Lithuanian championship and routinely defeated Pieno Žvaigždes in the away match.

After a long break, the center Šarakauskas came back to the game, and gave the Kaipeda's team more options under the hoop, but their primary weapon is still the back shot. The fact that it doesn't serve them best is a different story, because they're the third worst team in the Euroleague with 31.9%, after Zvezda and Unicaja.

- We're burning with desire to get even for the tough defeat in Turkey. We definitely don't lack motive. I only fear fatigue. We had a rough week behind us. We had an away game in Turkey, then in Žvaigždes... Galatasaray's defense isn't that good, but they're powerful offensively - Maksvytis added. His captain, Mažeika, played against Pieno, too, so Neptunas should be complete today.

While Neptunas rarely lose at home, the Turk vice champion don't win away at all. In four games, they've got four defeats and -43 points difference. Since they lost to Laboral Kutxa at home last week, today's game is super important. They come to the last round of the first part with 3-6 ratio, as do the Lithuanians, which means if they lose, Galatasaray would have to defeat Olympiacos in the last round, and that's not a mission we'd want even for our worst enemy. The Turks and the Greeks never had a friendly relationship. Galatasaray's fans even made threats against Olympiacos's fans on Twitter, and Greeks don't forget that kind of thing easily. This means the Turks will be playing the first final of the season, and this game is extremely important for them.

There were lots of comments about Galatasaray's defense not being as good as last year, they're much more offensively oriented this season. Unfortunately, they lack that agility when facing teams who can keep up with their offensive rhythm. So, they lost to Kutxa last week, got crushed by Doron Perkins in a few tough shots and two steals from Arroyo in the last minutes.

This weekend, Ataman pushed the new American Young to the starting five. He played over 30 minutes, got a good double-double (16+10), with 6/6 field goal. Even his free throws were decent, 4/5. Ataman was really content with the guy after the game, praised him publicly and said he thinks they got exactly what they wanted and needed. They struggled against Gaziantep, turned the -6 in the last three minutes, mostly thanks to Guler (20p) and Erceg (16p), while Arroyo had the humble 3/10 field goal.

Speaking of Arroyo, let's talk about that game against Kutxa. He scored over 20 points, but the Basques' coach Ibon Navarro said after the game that their focus was on stopping Arroyo's pass, that is, from organizing his team. They let him score more, but stopped him in this other aspect, which is a lot more important to Galatasaray than if the Puerto Rican scored 20+ in each match.

As for Neptunas, it's clear where the keys to the game are. Ataman has to find a way to match the Lithuanians' back shot. Whoever played an away game here had problems with that. The paint won't be an issue, but the defense will decide the game in this perimeter. So, that means the part that will be played by Arroyo, Guler and Pocius first of all, and then Aradori and Arslan on their part of the court.
