Lietuvos Rytas - Hapoel Jerusalem (98:88)

Things not good at Hapoel

  • Published:

The president at the Israeli club complained about the players not being devoted enough to winning and they allegedly no longer have faith in coach Franco. Forward Smith is being severely criticized lately and we're not even sure who traveled to Vilnius. The only thing they can be optimisitc about is the fact Lietuvos don't need this win

Lietuvos did what they had to do in Turkey when they beat Banvit away to secure Group E top spot. This game is irrelevant for them result-wise and it is therefore not surprising coach Seskus said the following:

- The outcome of this game won't do anything to affect our spot in the table, which is why we expect less pressure in the game. I want to use as many of my players as possibly so that everyone can get some time on the floor. We will do our best, of course, to finish the opening stage of the Eurocup in the best possible manner, but I hope our fans won't be quick to criticize us if things don't turn out for the best.

In other words, Lietuvos will most likely use this game to try out some new combinations and to rest some of the key players. At least that's what coach Seskus seems to be saying, but his team realistically don't need rest. They won the last three games, one of which in the domestic championship by 30 points. The other two were wins over Banvit away and Juventus home by 15 points. They are to play the worst performing team of the league after the game with Hapoel (Mazeikai who are without a single win after 16 rounds). The only tricky game Lietuvos could already be focused on is the one with Neptunas home, but that's not until December 28th.

Lietuvos acquired new point guard Janavicius ahead of the last championship game. He was given 15 minutes on the court to score 2 points and add 4 rebounds and 2 assists. That's not the most interesting acquisition at Lietuvos though - Lavrinovic is. He joined from Reggio Emilia to sign a contract valid till the end of the season.

- I don't want to brag, but I'm in excellent physical shape - Lavrinovic said after moving to Vilnius.

There is no information whether he can play Hapoel today but that isn't too important anyway since he is supposed to help the team in the second stage of Eurocup. When it comes to those who were questionable in the last Eurocup game, Leslie was given less than 3 minutes, Juskevicius 27, and Dambrauskas didn't make it on the list...All three played Juventus in the league and should be at coach Seskus' disposal today.

I can't figure out what is happening with Hapoel, who have the kind of a team with Euroleague quality (no one can convince me they are not better than Cedevita, for example) and how did they do? They didn't even make it to Eurocup second stage...

The chance for it was still there as they faced Ploiesti from Romania last round. They needed a win by 9 or more points, but barely managed to equalize for over time. They took the lead 106-100 in the second over time, but fail to take advantage of the momentum to get the point-difference up. It didn't really matter whether they were going to lose by 2 or 3 points or win by 2 or 3 because they allowed the opponent a 7-0 run. They needed another over time to try and get the point-difference right, but failed to force one...

Hapoel are now facing the possibility of finishing bottom table in this group, which would be huge disappointment for a team that played Euroleague qualifying games. Eurocup doesn't seem to be providing the team with enough motivation, which can see them end bottom table but that will probably not happen. Ploiesti will most likely beat Partizan home, and Lietuvos will have a better head-to-head record with the Serbian team even if they lost home. But, the final group spot is the least of their problems at the moment. The team failed miserably and that's all there is to it. After losing to Ploiesti home, coach Franco said:

- We are very disappointed about not getting through to the next stage. We gave it our best, even had momentum as we took the 106-100 lead, but failed to take advantage of it. We will not focus on the domestic competitions.

Things didn't go as planned in their next league game as they lost to Ironi Nahariye to record third consecutive defeat (second in a row in the Israeli league and third consecutive home).

It's almost incredible to lose a game after being 21 point up at half time but Hapoel managed to do so. Coach Franco tried many different line-ups, starting with Mensan-Bonsu who spent 7 minutes on the floor. Jones was given 31 minute from the bench, Gaffney only 5 minutes, while Kitchen wasn't on the team at all.

The media in Israel report that things at Hapoel aren't good, that the stars seem to be too good to associate themselves with others, that the players no longer trust coach Franco and that the fans slowly lose patience. The fans displayed their discontent after the last home defeat, and rumor has it that Smith and coach Franco aren't getting along. The American forward allegedly went on an angry rant following the defeat to Ploiesti, which was not appreciated by his colleagues who are fed up with him. The fact Smith spent the key moments of the Ironi game on the bench. President Uri took to Facebook to give everybody a piece of his mind:

- I don't care what your name is. If you don't do your best, you're out of here. Now shut up and do your best.

The information on who even traveled to Vilnius is not available, but things in Hapoel are clearly not good...
