Alingsas - Flensburg (22:27)

Flensburg need points in race for spot 2

  • Published:

The German side beat Kolding easily but cannot afford a slip as they face Alingsas in Sweden. Reaching the coveted spot two will be a tough task, even if they managed to win today

Flensburg settled the first head-to-head meeting with Alingsas by half time (19-10), which allowed Vranjes to give some younger players a chance to play the second half, thus bringing the intensity down significantly. Flensburg are now in much better shape, following a top-level performance against Kolding (27-20). The game was somewhat settled in the first ten minutes when Flensburg limited the Danes to only one goal.

Watching Vranjes' team play perform was great. Top-quality defense was leaving Kolding with absolutely no room. They lost all creativity, while Flensburg's attacks mostly didn't last longer than 10 seconds. Mogensen was too fast for the tall, older and slower Jorgesen and Laen, while back players Glandorf added his share of goals.

Those two points added up to a total of 8 points for Flensburg, which is still two points down to Kolding, who are to face Barcelona in Spain. Flensburg meet Alingsas in Sweden, Wisla in Poland (only a point down), and Beskitas home. The worst case scenario for Flensburg is spot 4 in the group, which would be a huge failure as they would be forced to play Kiel, Veszprem, or Kielce in Round of 16. That makes this game very important.

- Alingsas are a totally different team when playing home. I hope we'll confirm the game from Sunday - this is a very important match for us - coach Vranjes said.

- Away games with Kristianstad, Guif, and this one are the toughest games in Sweden for us, but it's nothing we didn't already experience.

Flensburg will have five Swedish players on the team today and the city they are to play in today is only 30 minutes out of Gotheborg, a place were Vranjes, right back Jakobsson and left back Wanne grew up. This will be a trip back home for them and a lot of friends, relatives, acquaintances of theirs are expected in the stands. And that is extra motif. If Flensburg do as they have against Barcelona for three halves and if their defense remains on the level from the Kolding game, Alignsas shouldn't be an obstacle either.

Another Swede at Flensburg, middle back Jim Gottfridson, is out.

Alignsas, on the other hand, have the whole team at their disposal, but don't feel very confident ahead of their last group match as they meet on of last season's Final Four participants. Alignsas went to play Barcelona in Spain last round to end with a deficit of 13 goals and a good performance only in the first half.

- We've opened the second half badly, it was as if we got scared because we felt we can stand up to them - Franzen said.

Barcelona had a 18-17 lead at half time because Alignsas played their usual fast pace game that was clearly proving to be successful. But, keeping the pace up against teams such as Barcelona is not easy, not even on the teams forcing it, as AHK proved both home and away. They in a a way beat themselves in Flensburg too, when they engaged in outrunning only to lose power. Flens' defense then took control.

- Andersson and Karlsson on the one end on the floor and Mogesen on the other - that's what destroyed us there. We know we'll need a miracle to win or even to be able to stand up to them. We believe that no one is invincible and we'll try and win supported by our fans. I know they will support us, we are playing the best possible opponent after all - home team's coach said.

The fact Flensburg's coach and a few players are Swedish should make things even more interesting today. This is how Franzen described the situation:

- The student meets his master. They destroyed us last time, managing to break our usual game pretty fast. But, we've learned something. We want to at least put up a good fight against a team that is ready for a fun game.

Franzen would love this game to be fun and 'beautiful' but it is really questionable whether Flensburg will be interested in such a thing. The points here are extremely important given the goals they set up earlier, while AHK don't find Champions League to be particularly important. The focused is on Elitserien, where the defending champions are no longer completely in charge.
