Olimpija dismantled Szolnoki just four days ago

The Slovenian team played a brilliant Eurocup game, while Szolnoki did well below their usual level

This is a second head-to-head game of these two teams in only four days, with Olimpija winning the first (Eurocup) one by 22 points. It was the best possible confidence boost ahead of this game that coach Pipan already characterized as important. Olimpija are in the race for ABA League play-offs and currently hold position 4 on a 6-4 record. Szolnoki are in spot seven with one win less.

Olimpija have had a very high-quality performance the last game following a poor start and bad defense performance in the first quarter. They went on to win the second one 26-8 to settle the game at half time (20 points up) and cruise towards the win that secured them a spot in the Eurocup second stage, which was one of the main goals at the club this season.

- This win saw us reach one of our goals for the season. It was very close at first, we had some poor defense responses and Szolnoki punished us for it. In the second quarter, we got better to improve both out defense and our attacking. Transition was better too and we won deservedly in the end. To be honest, I expected a more tougher game - said Ales Pipan, Olimpija's coach.

The injured Salin missed that game, just like Nikolov, who won't be there at coach's disposal today either. Team captain Dino Muric's return was great news, but Pipan decided to give him only 12 minutes on the floor and will clearly be careful about the time he gives him in the game. Rupnik was back after an injury as well to play only 10 minutes. Point guard Marinovic lead his team with 18 points, while Marinelli added 18 as well (6-for-7 in three pointers).

That's great news for Olimpija, especially now that Salin is out. Marinelli clearly jumped to the opportunity and is playing better each next game. Kanacevic is in good shape too, just like center Omic, who is given 30 minutes on the floor on average now that Begic is not longer on the team.

- This is a game even more important than the one we played during the week. We reached our goal and now have to focus only on ABA League. We've spent quite a lot of time analyzing the last game and we prepared for a different performance by Szolnoki. They will be motivated to stay one of the top teams in the table and we have to be aggressive and display will to win - Pipan said and added:

- We need to be very focused in defensive rebounding. We need to defend the key very well throughout the game because the Hungarians take advantage of any mistakes.

The Hungarian team's game fell apart in the second period of the game that took place a few days ago. They didn't have enough choice of players, especially at front count positions. With Jones still out, Gipson took over the point guard position to score 14 points, while Wittman and Sinovec added 13. Center Bader recorded 11 points, while Vojvoda didn't have a good performance after quite a long time, finishing with only 7 points. 

- We played a bad game, allowed them to start controlling it too early on and they used it too keep us from getting back in. The second quarter in which our shooting was bad and the defense seemed uninterested was the key to their win. The second half was a bit better on our part and that is what I want my players to be doing like throughout the game - Szolnok's coach Aleksic said.

Jones' absence was obvious in the small number of assists and with Gipson still not at his best level, Szolnoki definitely have problems to work on.

The injured center Keller is still out, while Jones remains questionable. If the American point guard misses yet another game, Szolnoki will most likely be in trouble. Gipson and Wittman, neither of whom are at Jones' level, will spend a lot of time in the game. Marko Brkic might be out with a shoulder injury.

Szolnoki lost both of their head-to-head games to Olimpija, allowing the Slovenian team to be very productive in both. Szolnoki's defense had no response to Olimpija's attack, despite playing very good defense against Buducnost in the previous ABA League round. Marinovic has been a particularity big problem for Szolnoki:

- Marinovic is the driving force of their team and he's the one we need to stop. We can't allow him to pass the ball freely, we need to be aggressive from the start to stop them from scoring with ease - Aleksic said.
