Poland - Germany (2:0)

Absences worrying Loew

  • Published:

Poland started off the qualifications in a great way, and with a lot of self-confidence they are awaiting today's meeting. The Germans' qualifying for the Euro shouldn't be questionable, but they've arrived with lots of problems

Gibraltar in the first round were only a warm up and a chance to get the goal-difference up, but the real qualifications for Poland begin today when they are hosting the current world champions against whom motivation comes on its own. Selector Adam Nawalka understands that the match against Scotland on Tuesday will be much more important, and he's not having success in trying to "calm" his players down for today's match:

- We've all been looking forward to this day, but we mustn't forget that the match against Germany is only one of many, and that the fight to qualify for the Euro will last until the very end of the qualifications, because in our group, besides Gibraltar, we have no weak opponents. And Germany are the absolute favorite in this story whose successes we completely respect, but that doesn't mean we're afraid of them; we're ready to give them one of our best games.

Poland's best have gathered in Warsaw, not counting the longer absent Borussia Dortmund's midfielder Blaszczykowski, and of those that did get the invitation, Bayern's defender from Leverkusen, Boenisch, had to cancel. The spot light will be on Robert Lewandowski, who built his football career in Germany.

- Germany may be overconfident after winning the World Cup and they may doze off a little which we could definitely use; in any case we won't park the bus in our penalty box. For me this match will be different because I know most of their players, and I nicely remember duels against Manuel Neuer; I scored my first goal in the Bundesliga against him when he was still in Schalke's jersey - spoke Bayern's forward, a four-time scorer in smashing Gibraltar a month ago.

The Germans started off the qualifications by beating Scotland. The world champions spoiled their fans this summer so a more convincing performance was expected, but in the end the three points are the most important. Selector Loew is thinking in the same way, especially today when a lot of absences are spoiling his plans.

- We thought that Ozil will be ready for today, but he won't. Schweinsteiger, Reus, Khedira and Gomez are still out. When we add a couple of guys who retired from the national team after the World Cup, we see that we are missing a lot of players who helped us win the gold in Brasil. But, I believe this youthful team can continue as they started off- said Loew.

The line up shouldn't undergo any significant changes: it's going to be the classic 4-2-3-1. The stopper couple don't seem problematic, young Rudiger and Durm will get the chance. From the front it looks really good: Loew has strong players at his disposal.

- Podolski should be playing more for Arsenal if he wants to have a bigger role in the team - Loew said.

According to the announced line up today he should set off from the first minute, but if he does it is a clear consequence of many absences, and not because of Podolski's merits.

Be that as it may, the pressure on the German side is a lot less than it was in some previous qualification cycles. With a new format it seems almost incredible that they could miss the Euro, so they can go through this match without a lot of pressure.
