Deportivo la Coruna - Elche (1:0)

A point wouldn't be much of a help for either team

  • Published:

Both coaches might claim that their teams play well, but the results tell a different story. Deportivo and Elche are, on the same record, in the two bottom spots of the table.

Not even half the season has gone by and it's already quite obvious the battle for avoiding relegation will be fierce and not ending till the very end. It's very possible that one of these teams does face relegation to Segunda in the end. 14 rounds in the season, Deportivo and Elche are on the very same record, holding the two bottom table spots. Only because of a worse goal difference are Elche bottom table.

It's hard to even discuss which of these teams are in better form at this points since they recorded one win in the last five rounds combined (Elche over Espnyol). Both teams were defeated home last round, Deportivo against Malaga, Elche against Atletico. But, we should note that they put up a good fight and that the team from La Coruna can regret not recording better result. Given all the facts, Haris Medunjanin knows how important this game is:

- We always want to win, this meeting is no exception. We weren't able to score lately and it's only normal that we can't win. We had some great attempts the last round, even missed a penalty kick, but what goes around comes around. I know the fans want a win and I know they're unhappy if things aren't going as they expect them to. This time, I'm asking for help and support as we meet our direct rival.

Roberto Canella will miss the game with an injury, but forward Luis Farina is back on the team. Sidnei Cleber struggled with a minor injury last week, but the coach put him on the list despite him not being 100% fit and ready to play. Diogo Salomao and Lucas Perez have been out for a while.

Deportivo and Elche are both bottom table, but visiting coach Fran Escriba doesn't think much of it:

- Deportivo should have at last three of four points more, and that would not keep them in this position. I think the situation is similar with us - we have been doing well lately but weren't able to get points. We need points now and neither we nor the opponents will be happy with a draw. I expect an exciting game and both team wanting to win.

Escriba confirmed that Aaron Niguez will be on the team today despite struggling with an injury the last few days. Manu Herrera, Elche's first choice goal keeper is still recovering from an injury. The recovery is going well, but it's still too early to know when he'll be back.
