Wozniacki beat Sharapova once this season

Maria is better in head-to-head matches (6-3), but Wozniacki beat her the only time they met this season. While the surface agrees with the Danish player better, Sharapova's performances are currently better, which means we're in for a very interesting match

Sharapova got to Singapore ranked as No.2 after a very good season. She won Madrid and French Open but then lost confidence and didn't advance as far as expected at Wimbledon and Montreal. She went to play Cinncinati to reach semifinals as the perfect preparation for the US Open. She was knocked out to Wozniacki who advanced to the the quarter finals.

Sharapova is well-known for her mental strength, putting an end to the crises. She went on to play Beijing and claimed the title having lost only one set on the way. That was the best possible preparation for Singapore, with her game improving in every possible aspect. She limited Ivanovic to only 4 games, beat Kvitova easily and improved her serving, controlled the game with her powerful forehand shots, with too many double faults being the only aspect of the game she can still work on.

- I'm happy that the tournament is about to start. I'm proud of my results in 2014 with French Open and Beijing as particularly successful tournaments. I feel strong, I'm happy with this group and I expect a challenge in each of the matches. I lost to some of my opponents this season and beat some of them - Sharapova said.

One of the players she lost to this season is Wozniacki, who beat her at US Open to go on and reach the final. But, Serena proved to be too tough once again. Caroline won only one tournament this season (Istanbul), but advanced far in many others. Her performances is very close to the game she had when she was ranked as world No.1 and even greater progress is expected from her.

The level of her dedication to the game got obvious when she forgot the pick up her check at US Open. She admitted to enjoying the game and the practice sessions, she's no longer insecure and takes initiative to get herself out of the situations in which she is the inferior player on the court. She still needs to work on defense-offense transition, but her game improved greatly compared to season's start. When asked about a new coach, Wozniacki said:

- I think it will be the same. I have tried with many different things, and I'm quite tired of trying. I'm happy with my game at the moment. My dad is a great coach and having family around is the best thing. I've noticed I'm not enjoying the game as much when they're not there. I'm excited to be in Singapore and look forward to the challenges.

Wozniacki managed to take advantage of Sharapova's lesser performance at US Open to beat her, but Sharapova claimed the Beijing title in an impressive manner, meaning her performances are currently better. One thing is sure though - Woznicki will need to be more aggressive against Sharapova's second service. The surface not being particularly fast suits her well.
